Maryland SoccerPlex Completes the Dream with Opening of Fields 1 & 2

What started out as a dream is now a reality

Boyds, Md. (June 6, 2016) – The Maryland SoccerPlex is excited to announce the grand opening of fields 1 and 2 on June 11, 2016 at 10 am. There will be a special ceremony  to commemorate the opening and acknowledgement of how the Maryland SoccerPlex has come full circle.

The Maryland Soccer Foundation was founded 20 years ago with the primary goal of giving kids an outstanding 24-field soccer facilty with high quality and safe playing fields. On June 11 this goal will be fully complete with the opening of the final two fields. The last two fields came about in large part because of the Maryland State District 15 and 39 legislative delegations securing a bond bill for the final funding.

“We finally gave our kids a complex,” said Maryland SoccerPlex Executive Director Trish Heffelfinger. “The idea was to give our kids outstanding fields to compete on with safety at the forefront of everything we do. It is extremely gratifying to finish what seemed like such a daunting task. It took help from many different entities but we have reached our goal.”

The public-private partnership formed between the Maryland National-Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) and the Maryland Soccer Foundation was the impetus and it has received strong support from Maryland State delegates and Montgomery County Council members. From the beginning the soccer community has also embraced the vision for the Maryland SoccerPlex, demonstrated by the eight legacy clubs that continue to be the backbone of SoccerPlex events and tournaments.  In addition, local communities and homeowners associations have provided unwavering support.

The Maryland SoccerPlex has exceeded its original vision becoming much more than just an outstanding soccer facility.  It has become a major regional economic engine and averages 650,000 visitors a year with over 10,000 games played annually. Economically the 24 million dollar a year impact can be felt in a multitude of ways on the weekends when local restaurants and hotels are filled with youth teams from around the country.

We invite you to attend this momentus occasion in the Foundation’s history. The ceremony will take place on-site at the Maryland SoccerPlex adjacent to Field 1, starting at 10am. Directions can be found on the Foundation’s website, www.mdsoccerplex.org.
