Maryland SoccerPlex Hosts First Annual Goals Against Cancer: Coaches vs Cops

100% of donations goes to local breast cancer charities

The Maryland Soccer Foundation, which includes the Maryland SoccerPlex and Discovery Sports Center, announced today that it will host the first annual Goals against Cancer charity match with 100% of all donations going to local breast cancer charities. The game will be October 6th at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex with a 7:00 pm kick-off. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. where donations will be accepted.

The teams that will be coming together to raise money and compete for bragging rights will consist of one team of local police officers and the other local soccer club coaches. The Coaches team will field coaches with both coaching and playing experience at the collegiate and professional level.

“When this opportunity presented itself we did not hesitate to host this great event,” said Maryland SoccerPlex Executive Director Trish Heffelfinger. “As most people know October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and to raise money for some of the local charities is just something very important to us and the Discovery Cup Tournament.”

The charity game will be a highlight for Discovery Cup weekend, which is an all-girls tournament at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Laurie Lane, the Executive Director of Potomac Soccer Association will be singing the National Anthem. In addition. Robert Purkey, a local referee, Tournament Director, that works with the City of Rockville will be donating his refereeing services to the game. During the charity game there will be raffles of different items including an autographed Washington Spirit jersey and scarf as well as numerous activities for families that attend.

The Coaches team will have representatives from 10 local teams including the D.C. United Academy, Bethesda Soccer Club, SAM Soccer, Grassroots Soccer Academy, FC Girondins De Bordeaux USA, FS Soccer Inc., Liverpool FCIA Maryland, McLean Youth Soccer, Potomac Soccer Association and Xenezies Soccer Academy. The coaches participating are all donating their time to support this important cause. The coaches’ playing experience boasts Division One NCAA athletes and even a former Iranian National team player! Anyone affiliated with these clubs are encouraged to come out and root for their favorite coach.

The Cops team will field an all-volunteer team of 29 officers. Twenty five of them are with the MCPD, two are with Maryland State Police and two with Rockville City Police. This co-ed team of officers range from patrol officers, detectives, members of specialized units, and various departments; and include ranks from police patrol officers up through Captain. All are volunteering their personal time to be a part of this very important community event. The final rosters will be posted on the Maryland SoccerPlex and Discovery Cup websites the week beginning October 1st and the community is encouraged to come out and support their local law enforcement.
