Major events at the Maryland SoccerPlex

and Discovery Sports Center in May 2015

Maryland Youth Soccer State Cup Finals, Potomac Memorial Tournament, Washington Spirit home games headline May schedule

BOYDS, Md. (May 1, 2015) - Two of Maryland's premier youth soccer events of the year, the State Cup finals and Potomac Memorial Tournament will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex in May. Boys and girls State Cup championship matches are slated for Sunday, May 3 while the Potomac Tournament continues its run as one of the nation's most coveted Memorial Day Weekend college showcases. A total of 368 top boys club soccer teams from throughout the United States and Canada will compete in front of hundreds of college coaches once again at the Potomac Memorial Tournament.

Spring soccer leagues: SAM, MSI, NCSL, WAGS
All of May 
Location: Complex Wide
May is one of the busiest months of the year on the youth soccer calendar, and the SoccerPlex is home to virtually every level of the game, including training, recreational, advanced recreational and all levels of travel soccer. Local players of every age from pre-school through seniors in high school from around Montgomery County and throughout the greater. D.C., Maryland and Virginia area will continue to compete and develop as players and individuals all month long at the SoccerPlex, representing the community's top leagues and clubs.  

MVSA Volleyball Capital Festival
May 2-3: 16, 17, 18 age groups
May 9-10: 14, 15 age groups
Location: Discovery Sports Center
The Montgomery Village Sports Association's premier volleyball tournament, the MVSA Capital Festival is being played at the Discovery Sports Center over two weekends in May. Many of the top local girls volleyball teams will compete in the event, with the 16-18 year old age groups playing from May 2-3 and the 14-15 year old age groups from May 9-10.

MSYSA State Cup Finals
May 3: U12-U17 Boys and Girls
Location: Complex Wide
This Sunday, 12 teams will prove themselves as the top youth soccer squad in the state with the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association State Cup Finals taking place at the SoccerPlex. All eyes will be on the Plex as state champions are crowned this weekend. 

Bump, Set, Drink (BSD) Volleyball League 
Thursday nights
Location: Discovery Sports Center
'Bump, Set, Drink'(BSD), the popular adult volleyball league continues its spring season throughout May, with the regular season concluding and playoffs beginning on May 21. The league champion will be decided on June 4. 

Prevention of ACL Injuries
May 13: 6:30-8:00 pm
Location: Discovery Sports Center Grand Room

Douglas Murphy, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon and President, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital Medical Staff will be presenting on ACL injury prevention and reconstruction at the Discovery Sports Center on May 13. The first 20 people to register will be placed into a drawing to win 2 FREE D.C. United tickets. Register here.

Maryland Flames Basketball
May 16-17: DMV Games and NTBA Qualifier
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Local travel basketball club Maryland Flames is hosting its DMV Games tournament and NTBA State and National Championships Qualifier from May 16-17. Girls teams from 3rd grade to 12th grade will compete at the Discovery Sports Center for a chance to earn their place in the state and national events. 

Washington Spirit NWSL home games

With the FIFA Women's World Cup around the corner, time is running out for professional women's soccer fans to send off their national team players before they depart for training. Washington Spirit players Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris have been named to the 23-player roster for the U.S. Women's National Team, while Diana Matheson will once again play for Canada in the World Cup. The Spirit have earned 3-1 wins over NWSL champion FC Kansas City and New Jersey side Sky Blue FC in their last two matches, and are currently ranked No. 1 in the league's power rankings. Fans can catch the Spirit in their two May home games before the World Cup begins, on May 16 against Sky Blue FC and May 30 against Portland Thorns FC. 

Start of Session 2 Basketball Clinics
May 19
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Local basketball players will continue developing their individual dribbling, shooting and defensive skills this month at the Discovery Sports Center with the start of the second eight-week basketball clinic. The clinic runs from May 19 through July 8, and offers one session per week. Age groups are divided between 5-8 and 9-12, and sessions take place for one hour on Tuesday and/or Wednesday evenings. Potomac Memorial Soccer Tournament
May 22-25
Location: Complex Wide
One of the premier youth soccer tournaments on the East Coast, the Potomac Memorial Day Tournament is set to play out Memorial Day Weekend at the SoccerPlex. A total of 368 elite boys travel soccer teams will compete in front of the some of the nation's top college coaches in the high-level showcase event hosted by the Potomac Soccer Association. Teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Vermont, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and several Canadian clubs will compete in the tournament. Maryland Future Stars Classic

May 23-24
Location: Discovery Sports Center
Urban Youth Basketball is hosting the Maryland Future Stars Classic on the eight Discovery Sports Center basketball courts the weekend of May 23-24 with boys teams ranging from the 8 and under age group all the way through high school seniors, and girls age groups from 2nd grade to 12th grade. The Future Stars Classic is an AAU basketball tournament featuring high-level travel teams.

The Maryland SoccerPlex (www.mdsoccerplex.org - 18031 Central Park Circle, Boyds, MD 20841) features 22 professionally maintained, regulation-sized soccer fields. The SoccerPlex offers a combination of playing surfaces with 11 Kentucky bluegrass fields, 7 Bermuda grass fields, 3 synthetic turf fields with lights and an award-winning Kentucky bluegrass stadium field with lights and permanent bleacher seating.

The SoccerPlex hosts youth leagues, adult leagues, youth tournaments, NCAA Division I college matches and conference championships (ACC), U.S. Open Cup matches (D.C. United), professional women's matches (Washington Spirit) and a variety of international teams and competitions.
