A New Chapter for SAM Soccer Families: Age Group Updates for 2026–27
At SAM Soccer, we’re always looking for ways to make the game more fun, inclusive, and rewarding for every player and family. That’s why we’re excited to share an important update coming for the 2026–2027 soccer season!
Starting in August 2026, SAM Soccer will be introducing a new age group policy designed to better support how kids learn, grow, and play together.
What’s Changing?
Instead of grouping players strictly by calendar birth year, teams will now be formed using the August 1 – July 31 birthday window.
In simple terms, this means players will be placed on teams that more closely match their school-year classmates, rather than just their birth year.
Why This Is Great News for Families
This update is all about improving the experience for everyone involved, especially the kids! Here’s what families can look forward to:
- Playing with friends and classmates
Kids are more likely to be on teams with peers they already know from school. - Fewer “trapped players”
Players who previously felt stuck between age groups will now have a more natural fit. - A more balanced and inclusive environment
Teams will feel more aligned socially and developmentally. - More fun, more growth
When kids feel comfortable and connected, they’re more likely to stay engaged and enjoy the game.
Part of a Bigger Movement
SAM Soccer isn’t alone in making this change. Major youth soccer organizations across the country including US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and American Youth Soccer Organization are all moving to this same age group structure.
This nationwide shift helps create more consistency across leagues and programs, making transitions smoother for families.
What This Means for Your Player
Starting in the 2026–27 season
- Your child may be placed in a new age group
- Teams will better reflect school grade levels
- Players will have more opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun alongside their peers
Looking Ahead
This change is another step in SAM Soccer’s commitment to building a positive, player-first environment where every child can thrive—on and off the field.
We’re excited about what this means for our community and can’t wait to see our players continue to grow, connect, and love the game even more 💙⚽

While this decision is up to Parents and Coaches we always recommend that players participate in the age group that is appropriate for them. For most players, this means playing on age.
